I have come across pics of porcini in Italia growing where it is grassy, and I believe I have seen pics of them doing that in the US, too.

I can honestly say that in the many years I have hunted them, I can not recall ever finding them there.

Thoughts?

I don't recall where I saw it, but, just the other day I saw a pic of some Boletus edulis growing right in a lawn. There was a lone tree near them.

Lots of the B. edulis I find is collected from lawns where Norway Spruce grows. I also find edulis in White Pine woods, hemlock woods, and oak woods. These are possibly different forms of edulis. Sometimes grassy areas in a forest are good for mushrooms (of different types) because these tend to be areas where the sunlight reaches the ground for a few hours each day. The temp fluctuations are probably favorable to some types of mushroom.

Very interesting. Thanks. I will keep an eye out for them there.

Luigi,
Along the Pacific Coast, often during December there are foragers in selected areas of California who hunt porcini at night by crawling across lawns on private property and basically hunt by feeling for button bumps with their hands.

Here is one I found growing out the side of a stump.

Rocky Mountain PORCINO in the grass...

...but not far from the trees.

Luigi, if you send me a private message I will tell you where they forage for these in the dark during December and I don't think it is so very far from where you live.

I advise getting permission and foraging during daylight hours.
